7 reasons decorators and DIYers are putting the roller down for a cordless sprayer

Fences, sheds, spindles and kitchen cabinets: the jobs that eat your weekends or your margins. Here's what changes when you spray them on an 18V battery instead.

Decorator spraying kitchen cabinet doors on trestles in a garage
Kitchen doors off, on trestles, sprayed in one session. No brush marks, no roller stipple.

Ask any decorator which jobs they quote high, and it's the fiddly ones: spindles, panelled doors, kitchen cabinets, fence panels. Ask any homeowner what's been on the to-do list longest, and it's the same list.

The brush and roller still have their place. But a cordless HVLP sprayer that runs on the same 18V batteries as your drill is changing how quickly those jobs get done, for trades on a day rate and for anyone with a free Saturday. Here's why.

1.Fence panels and sheds in hours, not weekends

Homeowner spraying a garden shed blue-grey
Half a shed in the time it takes to cut in with a brush.
The problemOverlap panels and shiplap have a hundred edges. With a brush you're working paint into every overlap, and a six-panel fence takes the whole weekend.
The fixThe spray gets into the overlaps and the grain in one pass. Most people get a fence or a shed done in an afternoon and still have Sunday.
"Did the whole back fence and the shed on Saturday morning. Usually that's my entire bank holiday gone."

2.No compressor, no hose, no setting up

Paint sprayer, drill, batteries and charger on van racking
It lives on the van racking with the rest of the 18V kit.
The problemAirless rigs and compressor setups are brilliant on new builds, but for a door, a run of spindles or a garden job they take longer to set up and clean than the work itself.
The fixThis one's a handheld tool. Fill the pot, click a battery in and spray. Set-up is a couple of minutes, so it earns its place on small jobs as well as big ones.

3.It runs on the batteries you already own

The problemMost sprayers lock you into another battery system, so you pay again for batteries and a charger you've already got on the van.
The fixThere's a sprayer for DeWalt-, Makita- and Milwaukee-compatible 18V batteries. Got batteries? Go tool only. Starting fresh? The complete kits come with two batteries and a charger.

4.Spindles and panelled doors without the drips

Spraying white paint onto staircase spindles
Mask once, spray every face of every spindle.
The problemA staircase is forty-odd spindles with four faces each. Brush them and you get runs down the corners, missed backs and a sore wrist by spindle ten.
The fixMask the stair and the wall, then mist each spindle from two sides. Thin even coats mean no runs, and the backs get done without contortions.

5.A factory finish on cabinets and furniture

The problemKitchen doors and furniture show every brush stroke and roller stipple. That's why a professional respray costs what it does.
The fixHVLP spraying lays down a fine, even coat, so doors and drawers come out smooth. Take the doors off, lay them flat and spray front and back.

6.Cleaning up takes minutes, not an hour

Rinsing sprayer parts under an outdoor tap
Pot, nozzle and cap off; rinse; done.
The problemEveryone's had a sprayer that took longer to clean than to use, so it ended up in the loft.
The fixEmpty the pot, run clean water through after water-based paint, then take the nozzle apart and rinse it. A few minutes at the outside tap and it's ready for tomorrow.

7.Big job? Bring more batteries, or go airless

The problemWhole-house exteriors and new-build walls are a different scale, and one small battery won't see you through.
The fixThe 3- and 4-battery kits come with large 8.0Ah (DeWalt- and Makita-compatible) or 6.0Ah (Milwaukee-compatible) batteries and a dual charger. For walls and ceilings at trade scale, there's the 1500W airless sprayer below.

Been decorating 15 years and wouldn't have touched a cordless sprayer five years ago. This one's on the van now for doors and spindles.

Does it work with emulsion on walls or just fences?

Hi Tom, yes, it'll spray emulsion. Thin it if the tin recommends it and mask up well. For whole rooms on a trade scale, the 1500W airless is quicker.

Hi Gav, mask and sheet up as you would for any spray job, keep the flow low and spray in short passes. Outdoors or in a garage is easiest for furniture.

Run 6 rental properties. This has paid for itself on fences alone.
