Buying guide

What is airless spraying?

An airless sprayer pumps paint at high pressure through a hose to a spray gun, where a small tip atomises it into a fan. Because no compressed air is used, more paint lands on the surface and coverage on large areas is fast and even.

Airless or cordless HVLP?

  • Airless — whole rooms, ceilings, new plaster, warehouse and commercial walls, long fences and exterior masonry.
  • Cordless HVLP — fences, sheds, outbuildings, furniture, doors and small rooms, with no hose and no setup. See cordless paint sprayers.

The sprayer

Our mains-powered airless sprayer has a 1500W motor, adjustable pressure, a listed flow rate of 2.2 litres per minute and a 250 mm spray width. Check the listing for what's included free in the box.

Spray guns and tips

Airless guns are rated to a maximum pressure — ours to 3600 PSI. The tip sets the fan width and the amount of paint: a 517 tip is a common all-rounder for emulsion on walls and ceilings. Keep the nozzle guard fitted for safety. Browse spray guns and tips.

Filters and strainers

Most blocked tips are caused by bits in the paint. Strain paint before it goes in, keep the suction filter clean and fit the right gun filter for your material — finer mesh for thin paints, coarser for thicker coatings. See filters and strainers.

Reaching high areas

Extension poles and flexible wands let you spray ceilings, gables and tall walls from the ground, and a roller attachment lets you roll a finish coat straight from the sprayer in furnished rooms. See extension poles and wands.

Preparation and safety

  • Mask floors, windows and fittings — see painting preparation.
  • Wear a respirator, eye protection and coveralls.
  • Never point the gun at skin, and always lock the trigger when not spraying.
  • Release pressure before changing or cleaning the tip.

Cleaning and maintenance

Flush the pump, hose and gun with water (or the recommended cleaner) straight after use, clean all filters, and store the tip in water or cleaning solution. Replace worn tips — a worn tip wastes paint and gives an uneven fan. Spares are in airless parts and spares.

Questions

What size tip should I use for emulsion on walls?
A 517 tip is a common all-rounder for emulsion on walls and ceilings. Check your paint's guidance for the recommended tip size.
Do I need to thin paint for an airless sprayer?
Many emulsions spray without thinning in an airless sprayer. Always follow the paint manufacturer's guidance.
Airless or cordless — which should I buy?
Airless for whole rooms, ceilings and large exterior walls; cordless HVLP for fences, sheds, furniture and smaller jobs.
How do I stop the tip blocking?
Strain the paint, keep the suction and gun filters clean, and reverse the tip to clear a blockage (with the trigger locked).
Is the sprayer mains powered?
Yes — our airless sprayer is mains powered, so there are no batteries to charge.
