Buying guide

Why an SDS hammer drill?

A standard combi drill struggles with concrete. An SDS rotary hammer uses a piston-driven hammer action and SDS bits that lock in place, so it drills masonry far more easily and with less effort from you.

Capacity and speed

Our DeWalt-compatible hammer drill has a brushless motor, speeds up to 4,000 RPM and drills up to 28 mm in masonry. Our Makita-compatible hammer drill drills up to 26 mm. Check each listing for its modes and bit type.

Typical jobs

  • Fixings for shelves, brackets, TV mounts and handrails.
  • Holes for cables, pipes and ventilation.
  • Anchors and frame fixings on site.

Batteries

Hammer drilling is high-draw work, so a larger battery or a 3 or 4-battery kit keeps you going on long jobs.

Safety

Wear eye and hearing protection and a dust mask, check walls for cables and pipes before drilling, and hold the side handle firmly.
